"When the war started, my husband was constantly reading the news, and he decided that we were in a safer place and would not be touched," says Anna Sokil, an apartment owner in Irpin. "I was at home with my family. The first shell hit the couch where my son had been lying two minutes ago. We grabbed a bag with documents and crawled out into the corridor. There we lay on the floor for some time while our house was being shelled," Anna recalls.

During the Russian occupation and the liberation of the settlement, the death toll was

• up to 300 civilians
• up to 50 Ukrainian militaries (including 16 officers of the territorial defense forces)
• 100 Ukrainian soldiers, including 29 officers of the territorial defense forces, were injured.

The city suffered extensive destruction in the Battle of Irpin — over the control of the city between Russian and Ukrainian armed forces during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to the study of the KSE Institute:

• In total, 48% of the total housing stock was destroyed — 9,690 residential buildings, outbuildings, and structures with a total area of 4.1 million square meters;
• 10.5 thousand buildings in the city were damaged, 2501 of which were heavily damaged or completely destroyed;
• 53% of all social facilities in the city were destroyed, with losses estimated at UAH 3.7 billion;
• 54 educational institutions destroyed;
• 26 medical institutions destroyed;
• 16 cultural and religious facilities destroyed;
• 323 industrial buildings worth UAH 2.9 billion were damaged or destroyed.
